This exists for two reasons -- one, because this site is not cheap to run. I'm not whining here, but I do spend several hundred dollars a month on the basics of running the site. That's not including one-time purchases. So the membership fees help to offset that cost. And two, it allows for a little exclusivity for those who want to go the extra step. It allows content to be limited to those who are willing to help support the site.
