Amen to that. Dude needs to stick with being a geek.
Especially when he tries to be a political philosopher.
All Hail the ESR!
Although he does get carried away with his own cleverness sometimes.
Too little too late, but still worth mentioning: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
I voted for Gentoo. Not out of any experience with said platform but rather out of too much experience with RedHat. I'm dreading having to deal with it but I'm going to have to convert our workstations and renderfarm away from RH 7.3 (~20 machines). After much reading I think Gentoo is the winner.
I've heard that Mac goes well with fish.
I ocassionally use mac.. but usually only with cheese. I prefer other pastas for most things.

I administrate something like 2 dozen Linux servers for a living, use or manage half a dozen Linux desktops, and run a few more Linux servers at home just for my own amusement. The majority of them are running Gentoo of some flavor now and I'm hellbent on getting the rest converted. Heck, I like gentoo so much and running it on x86 hardware got to be so easy I bought some Sun ultrasparc boxes just for a little challenege.
Once you use Portage for a little while and get a feel for the flexibility of ebuilds it becomes almost painful to go back to an rpm or deb based distro. While not every single one of Gentoo's standard packages is current with the original software or installs with the options you want, it's trivial to make your own ebuild to get exactly what you had in mind.
As for that difficult to install perception, it's perpetuated by people that need hand holding and the blind acceptance of binary packaging. By the time you've done 3 Gentoo installs you can pretty much do them from memory.
Uhh, I haven't used Linux in a while to access StG. My Linux Mozilla refused to display the right font-sizes, so I just stopped using it for browsing.
You're a mac user, aren't you? :?

Hey, it's not my fault your shitty operating system can't display vowels!
(PS: This comes to mind)

I'd vote for Fedora. 'Cuz I think those hats are classy.

Eh, even if you don't know what it means, I think that the pros and cons list is lucid and general enough for anyone to hypothesize. Sooooo it counts as half a vote maybe?
Does it help that I voted for Fedora and had (still have) no idea what the hell any of it means at all?

So far, you've been dead-on with your replies to my posts, so I'm willing to accept that :)
But if I find out that DiVX et al video compression algos don't use macroblock/AE style encoding, I'll be severely heart broken :(
Yeah - but another of the Gentoo votes was mine, and I'm always right :doubt:
There's a thin line between genius and insanity - where's my eraser?
Those stats are probably pretty accurate for OS percentages, but they're only calculating the PHPNuke-based pages :)
Speaking of which, I need to post another round of amusing search engine hits and links soon...
Nahh, it's just myself, dev2r, tww1fa, and sheepshaver visiting a whole bunch ;)
I'm not saying that there aren't viewers who use linux...JUST THAT THEY SHOULD POST MORE!!!!111
LUNIX!!!!!111
Hmm... a geek site has viewers that use linux? Nooooooo. You're pullin' my leg.

Say what you will, but I checked the stats earlier this evening, and I checked em again just now, and Linux is up by 0.1%! Which means that my suspicions have been confirmed--there ARE lots of Linux users here. YOU ALL NEED TO COME OUT OF THE WOODWORK!!!
And who the hell are the five people accessing this site from OS/2?? Jeez Steph, you should start tracking people who come here with Amiga!
Linux.... Isn't that Lucy's little brother? The smart one with the blanket?

Considering that one of the votes for gentoo is me and thus doesn't count, this poll has proved decidedly unhelpful :(
What?? Sorry I can't understand a word. Seriously, learn to friggin' type
Oh well, I guess that means that I'm left to draw my own conclusions as to why you couldn't make a simple decision based on a very clear list of pros and cons.
But there were 2 other votes, and if I had voted by your suggestions, I wouldn't have gotten my smirking revenge. :D
You're only young once, but you can remain immature indefinatly.
LIES!!!
EDIT: I just assumed that it was the benish voting for Knoppix :P
Additionally, even if you don't know anything about Linux, you can still make a moderately educated judgement call based on the pros and cons that I listed above. So THERE!
About a day ago, I was going through the geekdom forum and was, as per usual, completely baffled by every single one of your posts. Then I saw this one and though "'Please specify', eh? Time for a little revenge!" And with that I clicked the button. Assuming I kept you puzzled for at least a day as to what the 'other' could be, I think my mission has been accomplished.
Take that! :D

I like Knoppix as well, but I only use it as a cd-bootable OS.
EDIT: Anyway, Knoppix is just Debian modified so that it can be cd-bootable. So I'll count your suggestion as a vote for Debian.
I'm a big fan of knoppix. I generally use it for my device programming, i.e. microcontroller, fpga, etc...
Thanks, tww1fa, I'm leaning toward Gentoo myself.
I'm curious...what was the "other" vote?
Re: Speaking of Linux...
Hard to install is relative - it's true that there are many more steps required to install Gentoo than Fedora, but those steps are very well documented in the Gentoo installation docs. And since you do the install by hand, instead of having an installer do them for you, you know what's been done and have a good idea of where to look for configuration files, etc.
There's a thin line between genius and insanity - where's my eraser?
Speaking of Linux...
I'm rebuilding my machine this week. What distro should I use?
Fedora:
Pro: Ease of install, ease of use, I've been using Red Hat for six years so I'm familiar with it.
Con: Red Hat is charging businesses per processor, and I am philosophically opposed to a Linux distro doing that. Plus Red Hat seems to be much more focused on enterprise stuff these days.
Gentoo:
Pro: Major flexibility, portage
Con: Hard to install
Debian:
Pro: Not really sure, just know a lot of people who like it
Cons: I hear that it is difficult to configure, it seems to have a cult following but I have yet to hear anything particularly remarkable about it.
I am NOT going to install Mandrake (too unstable), Lindows or College Linux (I'm past the rookie phase), any flavor of BSD (too inflexible), Slackware (too stripped down), or SCO (they are asshats), so don't bother suggesting any of those.
I'm wrestling with this, so any compelling arguments would be appreciated.
EDIT: I'm not installing SuSe, either, because they are asshats as well.
