Hello everyone, its been a really long time since I have been around. I have been really busy lately. I find myself in need of some information, my father resently passed away and in going through all the things in the basement I have come across several boxes of old books dating back to the 1800's. The problem is the smell terrible from the mustyness in the basement. Does anyone know a way to get rid of this smell, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

I'm sorry to hear about your father. I've always been able to comfort myself when someone dies by telling myself that they lived a full life.

It hardly bothered me at all when my almost 90 year old grandfather died, because he'd lived such a long and fulfilling life.

I hope you can find comfort in that fact.

I am sorry for your loss.

I am sorry for your loss.

As for the books clean them with a dry cloth. Try airing them out if you have place you can let fresh air get to them. If they are showing visible mold, they may be a lost cause. I have tried spraying very, very, very, lightly with Lysol with limited success in the past.

I found this advise on the web and may try it my self:

"Place musty-smelling books in a paper bag filled with cat-box litter. Close the bag and leave it for about a week. When you take the books out, no odor will remain."

Source: Family Circle 9/8/87, p. 154.

Also this site may help. :

thank you all

It was a tough time but a blessing from what I understand was the next step in the progression of the cancer. Thank you all for your kind words and advice. I actually felt bad after reading everything, my desire was not to bring up bad times. As we have two cats I am going to try the kitty litter thing and I will let you know how it works. Things are a lot calmer around here now and I hope to be here more often again. Thank you all once again, Gary
