Music player on Linux?

On my Windows box, I use iTunes. I like it. It does what I want in a music player: it has a simple, clean interface and allows me to set the songs in a playlist in the order that I want (and remembers that order even if the list is resorted by title, album, etc.) Right now, I have Banshee on my linux box. It's okay, but not great. The thing that bothers me the most is that I can't set a custom order to the playlist. I can only sort by the given criteria (title, artist, track, etc). What are your suggestions? Why? (I'm running Ubuntu 6.0 if that matters.)

I think WinAmp runs on Linux. But I can't remember. Check WinAmp.com.

There was an alpha at one

There was an alpha at one point, but right now "winamp for linux" is really XMMS.

Blaze however said he likes iTunes, so I'm trying out Songbird to see if he'd like it.

rhythmbox

my fiance suggests rhythmbox; he's only used it a bit, i think, but he feels it's rather like iTunes (in fact it's "about" section says it was inspired by iTunes). it's definitely available as a debian package, so it should be available as an ubuntu package as well.

Actually, I can't stand WinAmp. It has far too many bells and whistles (that I'll never use) clogging up the interface.

I prefer rhythmbox

XMMS has got a somehow confusing interface (for me anyway). Managing libraries and playlists in rhythmbox is quite simple, plus it allows to manage podcast and radio stations. I am using it on Fedora Core 6 without problems.

I looked at the Rhythmbox

I looked at the Rhythmbox site, and the screen caps seem to imply that it's missing the one feature that I really want: the ability to create a custom order to playlists, and have that order remembered no matter how I may temporarily sort the list.

If you look at iTunes Player, the left-hand column is the "play order" of that song. This allows me to take a long playlist with a custom order, sort it by album or artist, and then sort it back to the original order.

I actually use this feature quite a bit, and really don't want to lose it. On the flip-side, I want something clean and simple.
