CHEESE

CHEESE

I have the biggest craving right now for a really good spread of cheeses and crackers!

Just thought you all needed to know that. We really need to go grocery shopping.

I keep thinking about how much I want to share food-related stuff online. I saw a show on the Food Network the other day (gah! I'm hooked on that damn channel now!) that had a "kitchen of the future" demo from MIT. Most of it was pretty over the top, but they had implemented an idea nearly identical to one I had that involved using a webcam to capture an image of food inside the fridge. What I'd really like to do though is catalog/barcode scan all food items, both for publishing purposes and recipe searching. I can't think of a method that wouldn't be tedious and unreliable though... there are UPC databases but I haven't exactly been blown away by them. Not to mention that it wouldn't help with fresh foods. And then needing to keep track of how much you have of something, or when it's been used up. Not a trivial endeavour.

Does anyone know of a good free/uber-cheap server monitoring program/service that will SMS when the address is unreachable? Even better, one that will check and notify you if a certain file has not been updated for a period of time?

Anyone want a giant aluminum hamster wheel type thing? Our neighbour moved out and left it behind. The thing is really damn cool and beautifully crafted but it's like 6' in diameter (was apparently part of some art installation). He was turning it into a bar. Try as I might, I can't think of a place for the darned thing here.

I realized I've been pushing my back too hard. It felt like it was almost better, but I still can't lift anything heavy or move quickly... then I realized how sore and fidgety I was getting partway through the day after sitting. So it's back to getting horizontal a couple of times a day. This seems to be helping immensely again. I'm not miserable by the end of the day if I just take it slow and rest every so often.

Stupid back. My impatience and injuries where you need to "take it easy" don't go so well together :P

Behold the power of cheese!

I've been really happy with the iGourmet.com cheese of the month subscription Denise and I got. Some outstanding cheese that I would never have heard of, never mind tried!

InterMapper is an inexpensive server monitoring program that I've used. No idea if it would be suitable for you. It can send pages when things are down based on what it's checking.

Nagios

I use it to monitor my servers.

Customizable and you can trigger on pretty much anything. I have several HTTP servers monitored, but I would need to look and see how to trigger on a file date…

Let me know if I can lend a hand….

Emeril

I catch his "The Essence of Emeril" once in a while... I get more practical info out of "Good Eats" or even the "30 Minute Meals" show...

dont know much about hamster wheels

but I can recommend a trip up Shattuck to the Berkeley Cheese Board co-op.

hint: free samples.

Food Network

Rachel Ray is my girl, anyone that can put together a meal in
30 minutes has my love and devotion.

Cheese and Servers

Ah, I love cheese and the food network too. I'm a Alton Brown and Rachel Ray Fan. I loved the summer show Alton did called feasting on asphalt which was a very cool show. As far as networking monitoring check out
http://www.siteuptime.com/ they offer free and cost solutions.

Rachel Ray

Rachel, now has another show now on (NBC), its a cook/talk show which she does 7 minute meals everyday on the show.

Ahhh! Rachel Ray and Emeril

Ahhh! Rachel Ray and Emeril are probably my two LEAST favourite Food Network people. That and the Unwrapped guy... like the show, but he's annoying as hell.

Now Alton Brown... I want to have his nerdy, foody babies.

Mmm yay for cheese.  I will have to check out that shop.

And thanks for the monitoring suggestions -- I'll be checking them all out.

Rachel Ray

I owe my extra 25 lbs to Rachel. my wife has ever one of her cookbooks, videos and magazines... That is all we eat but it is good...

No cheese, Gromit! Not a bit in the house!

Wallace: Gromit, that's it! Cheese! We'll go somewhere where there's cheese!
[Looks at "Cheese Holidays" magazine, then out window]
Wallace: Everybody knows the moon is made of cheese...
