Camera shopping

I've spent part of the afternoon doing some research and price shopping and came up with this tentative shopping cart full of goodies from B&H.

That's not including $125 in Canon rebates. I'm not sure about the extra lens... we'll see. But since I'm very keen on shooting indoors in low light, the larger aperture is reeeeally tempting. The 18-55mm it comes with is only $65 more, so there's not much point in not getting that.

Any opinions? Is the Extreme III card worth it?

Good camera choice. I have the 20D which is the next step up - same 8MP sensor but more control and a more robust body. When we bought it the Rebel XT wasn't yet available - if it had been I might have bought it instead of the 20D and saved some money.

Definitely a good choice of place to order from.

I'd try out the 18-55mm lens first. The sensor on the Canons doesn't show a huge amount of noise increase if you push up the sensitivity. However, if you're interested in portraiture where you want a small depth-of-field, go for it. Another (much cheaper option) is the EF 50 1.8 lens. It's an amazingly good lens for the money (around $70.)

I use it almost exclusively at gigs without flash and it can turn a good image: http://www.guru.gg/np/20050604/

The 18-55mm is good for everyday work and generally worth the extra cash you pay for the kit.

The 350D is a cute lil thing too. Feels nice in the hand, not too heavy. You'll notice the extra speed from the Extreme on the 350D. Compared to my 300D it's fast fast fast at saving to card.

As far as lenses go, start with a basic set of 'cheap' lenses. I've seen some amazing images taken with them. Then spend a lot of time, and get a lot of advice before buying the more expensive ones :-)

Have fun sweetie *hugs*

Steph, I have a 5d 28-135, 24-70, 24-105, 70-300, and

Steph,

I have a 5d 28-135, 24-70, 24-105, 70-300, and 17-40.

Remember the 28 won't be a 28 on the rebel, they have a smaller than 35 sensor. You want to consider a wide-medium tele zoom; if you want the biggest bang for the buck. Go with a Tamron or Sigma as they are near manufacturer quality @ much lower prices, if cost is a driving factor. Sigma has a 18-125mm (and a 18-200) and Tamron has a 17-50 (also a 18-200). The 17-50 is fast and good quality. Invest in a good flash like the 580 or 430; the results will be far superior to the internal and later you can add another (wireless)for great semi-studio flash quality. write me if you have any questions. The Ultra3 is great, but save the $ and get a fast lexar from newegg. ;-)
