They're in Alberta, Canada, but part of the problem is that they're completely unreachable. All the company contact info no longer exists.

Not 100% sure how AmEx works but just cancel your amex card. You also mentioned you got an email saying to rebill and reship the item. If thats the case then just return the phone when and if you get it and ask for a refund.

Wow sorry to hear, literally, that this is going so rough for you. Best of luck. Things like this is why I tend to only order from bigger merchants online, aka the Amazon, etc., type. I'd rather pay more to have the ease of mind.
Best of luck, again.

PLUS the officers and directors of the AB co in their personal capacities. Yes, they are personally liable.
Tack on a GOOD chunk of punitive and aggrevated damages to get everyones attention and bump it up out of small claims court - at that point they should offer a cheerful refund plus expenses.
ALSO - arrange for TV coverage - the online shopping scams are a hot item for the consumer assistance stories
Take the game away from their playground and into yours.

Doesn't Marg want your piano? Kinda, keeping it in the family..

If I had the space and the money to move it I totally would do it for her if she asked. However, in my situation it hardly seems worth it. First, I'm flat broke... as in, when I move I won't eat until after I get my first paycheck and pay all my expenses. Second, although I took up to grade 9 RCM piano, I *never* play the instrument for a number of reasons I won't get into here. Also, considering I don't have an apartment yet and don't know if I'll be able to get one, it would be foolish to say I could take the piano, even if just for Steph's sake. Seriously, Ottawa valley = 0% vacancy, ie: the company I'm going to work for is hiring 100's of new people and there are literally ~10 apartments that will be available in all the surrounding communities, villages, towns etc., all the way to Ottawa (~2.5 hours away on a good day). I know it seems unfathomable, but it's true: they didn't think ahead and now they actually don't have the space for us, so I have no idea if I'll be tenting it in someone's back yard indefinitely or if they'll cram us into hotel rooms, 4 to a room, or if I'll somehow work a miracle and get one of the *nonexistent* vacancies.
Do... do I sound stressed? *shakes, bites nails, tries to study for 2pm exam*

Sounds like AmEx could be taken to court on a conspirisy to defraud charge. Because this bull about the second charge really is fraud, and AmEx is aiding said fraud. Just the whole thing sounds like a major pain. Would be nice if you could find a laywer that would work for a % of any settlement, and sue the pants off AmEx.

Lawsuit seems the only way to go. And if you file one, don't only file it in Canada, but in the US too. Often, a multinational lawsuit will get more attention. Plus, Amex US is seperate from Amex Canada, but they share the same corporate officers (Being a multinational tiered conglomerate.) And yes, name those officers INDIVIDUALLY as well as the company in any lawsuit you file. They can be sued directly. Also, file for punitive damages, court costs and lawyer fees. You'll rack up a few million really fast.

Something like this happened to me years ago--only it was with my Visa card. I called, told them I'd been charged twice by an electronics company in Korea (the exact wording I used was that the second charge was NOT authorized by me). They tried to contact the company in Korea, couldn't, and they gave me my money back since I could point directly to the date of the first charging.
A lawsuit is a major headache and it probably will cost money. I think I'd just try to work it out with AmEx first.
Strange that AmEx of all companies would give you this kind of crap. Good luck with it! I hope it all works out!
When you want to solve
When you want to solve something you have to spend some money not just time. Find a good lawyer and let him do all the procedures necessary. Otherwise you risk losing your time and not solve anything.

Suggestion - sometimes if you write to the Attorney General's office in the state which the company is based they will write an inquiry to the company on your behalf. Send them all the information and mention consumer fraud. They can not take any overt action, but will do an inquiry. i have found that this will generally nudge the company to resolve the issue.
Good luck.
