Here's what I'm looking at making available on the home page:

Default home page content (shows for guests, or if you haven't customized it)

Webcam
Lifecam
Blog
Latest activity (this is ALL comments, forum posts, blog comments, photo comments, etc.)
Currents
News
Tag cloud (or something similar showing categories of content)

Optional home page content (can be added based on your preferences)

Schedule
Random photo
Forums (more detailed than all latest activity)
Location (GPS)
Members currently online
Chat (chat topic, latest messages)
Cam portal
Cam archive
Random member

Any other ideas for things you'd like to have quick access to?

There's going to be a lot more focus on the content that YOU guys produce... more detailed profiles, pulling in content from other sites, and so on. This will highlight a random member's profile/content/links/pixel art space/etc.

would the chat part of the optional content include a list of people currently chatting, or is that included in the "members online" section?

Yes, the chat block would include the list of occupants. Members online would be people currently browsing the site.
