Gimme your WILDEST dreams for the site. What do you want to see? Keep it relatively clean please :P

This is a brainstorming session, so there are no wrong answers, no stupid suggestions, and no such thing as too big or too small.

I think that there should some sort of integrated device that allows people to slap one another in the face through your site, and specifically the forums.

Failing that, I think that for the grammer/splelign nazis amongst us, it would be neat to have a tally going to various screw-ups that we allow to slip into our posts from time to time. And it would naturally have to be something that Spaz couldn't just erase and pretend like nothing happened when he got busted for something.

I also like the idea of "awards" for people posting on the forums. Stuff like "most active newbie" or "most original poster" and other stuff like that. Maybe the Semi-Annual Steph the Geek Forums Contribution Awards in the Field of Excellent Greatness or something... SAStGFCA.

Maybe something that actually spells something.

OH! And what about a firefox plug-in that lets you know when the forums have been updates with something? Either detailed (which thread and who was the most recent poster) or not (just that there's been a new post since last you visited).

One thing I'd like to see is a totally non-graphical version of the site. As nice as the graphics and colours are it makes it hard to peruse the site at work.

Absolutely :) The home page content will be user-customizable, so you could choose to have a version with no cams/images on it at all. I want to make the content as flexible as possible. There will be RSS feeds available for everything as well.

Edit: Ahem. This was in response to Buster, not scoops, who gets a nice, hard smack instead.

Any more off-topic posts are being deleted.

It would also be very nice to have a merged, chronological view of the forums.

For a good example see:
http://www.photo.net/bboard/unified/
and
http://photo.net/community/forums

you can customize which forums you want in the unified view.

I find that the 3 posts in the little blob on the front page just isn't enough of an overview of forum activity.

Not necessarily the -site-, but since it's a 'brainstorming' thread, I thought I'd chime in: I've always dreamed about having soft-subbed streams with the IRC chatter as you see it on your end slipped into the video file.

Yeah, I'm a dreamer. ;)

Hah that's a cool idea!

Someone really needs to develop an ajax irc client so I don't have to use that damn java one, and I can integrate the chat into the site better.

Oh, for those who haven't a clue what I'm talking about, it's something along the lines of this: http://www.matroska.org/

Basically, when you open the video file, you get an icon in your system tray (in Windows, no clue about Linux, though it is supported), that allows you to switch various streams on and off, so you could have a video file with multiple audio streams that could be listened to individually (different languages, for example), or subtitles that can be turned on/off and exist in multiple languages.

You can even have multiple video streams, but I haven't a clue why you'd want to. Maybe alternative music videos? :P

With a wireless webcam which doesn't mind moving,... you could have zoe-cam!

Hehehe, do you mean Zoe-mounted? I think she might object :P

I am, however, serious about a pan-tilt-zoom cam on the new site.

well.. cams,...

I personally would rather see a larger lifecam updated less often than a small cam where the details can't be seen.

Err... I like the blue theme, and I think it'd be cool if the Steph icon was animated, to interact with whatever the person is doing on the site... just little thing like winking, laughing, etc. If you wanted, you could also program in a (seemingly) random set of motions like blinking, looking up toward the cam windows, yawning if the person isn't doing anything, etc.

I like animation. And blue.

A VGA cam (four times the current size) will definitely be there.

If you're still a member right now, I actually added a second (and VGA) lifecam to the membership site in the meantime.

Hrm that's an interesting extension of something I was having a discussion about the other day. When the GPS stuff is finalized, I'd like to have a little Steph status icon on the home page, that shows location and maybe weather in graphical form. Could make it more of an animated/interactive icon... thanks for the idea :)

Couple of ideas:

An in-line reply function. Having access to the replies is nice, but if I'm replying to a certain person, I like having the option of replying right below them so I can make sure I get everything right. See the use of IGNBQ plugin for Firefox/Mozilla on the IGN message boards for an example. I could send you a screen shot next time I wander over there.

Semi-customizable lifecam, or an ability to select from 3-4 lifecams, say overall, computer, kitchen, etc.. It might be a bit of a bandwith eater, but I'm sure there are ways around that.

A pet-cam might be a neat idea. Not a strapped to pet thing, but a pet-height cam that people can click on if they want. Because people are weird.

I like the GPS toolbar icon for tracking. Nothing special but maybe a general idea of location.

More naked Steph, of course.

Semi-customizable text options. Not everything in the book, but maybe a few styles for people to use.

You'd have to have a camera aimed under your bed to catch Zoe when you're not there if you wanted to do a pet-height cam. And a little light source that doesn't scare her out. :)

How about a laser pointer that can be controlled by members? That way we can give Zoe some exercise!

How about a way to comment on the main site webcam ?

For Example: Why does a cold make you look like the pumpkin king? 8O

Could be fun...

Totally :) I'd rather avoid the cam pop up turning into a shoutbox, but the new cam archive will allow comments on cam pics :)

How about an archive of the bath cam? For er... research purposes. I'm doing research on bathing patterns of... uh... Naked Chicks.

Hehe, yeah, I've had requests but the cams are in such a state of flux right now (I'm only here a little while longer before I'm back in Toronto, then California) so I haven't set up any other archiving. But I suspect that I'll do the bathcam again in CA, so I will archive it then.

Dumb Question

Is there a way to flag everything marked "new" in the forum? I get so far behind that I would just like to set everything as "read" and go from there.
