You back yet? I have news...
*blinks*
Marg
K,
I got a job offer for the position of R&D Scientist/Engineer in the Recycle Fuel Fabrication Laboratory of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited at the Chalk River location. It's a Level II Secret Security job, dealing with Plutonium for fuel pellets etc.
And, I'm 96% sure I'm going to accept.
Scary, huh?
Marg :( :D :?
Thanks for the vote of confidence, adam_13. I just meant it's scary to make such a major life decision, especially when it means basically leaving my entire life behind. I think it'll be tough, but I've got a great boyfriend who's always there for me when I need support... among other services  .

I wish you the best. I remember my first job with Boeing. Threw up in the parking lot the first day :) From what I can tell from this distance, you will do great. Let us know how it goes within the limitations of what you can say.
I sure will. I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. There are a lot of pros and cons, but the people are really friendly and atmosphere is too, so I feel safe in saying I'll probably get a lot of support from co-workers and superiors too.

Oh, and if you could lay hands on some weapons-grade plutonium for me, that would be just grand. I've got a plan to raise some money to pay off my student loans. I just need some plutonium, an island shaped like a skull with a volcano and an ice-cream van.

Ooh ooh ooh can I be an eye-patch wearing henchman???
Ohhhh Chalk River. Near Deep River and Pembroke.I used to live up there. From what I remember was nice, if you can, try living in Deep River. I was a nice touristy area.
*I'm scared*
Well, not really scared so much as worried I won't really find anywhere to fit in.
Marg
Any and all other tips and tidbits of info regarding local alternative bar scene, maybe even gothy clubs and clothing stores etc. would be greatly appreciated.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*whew*
Sorry. You caught me off guard there.
I don't think I ought to sugar-coat anything, since that won't help you at all, but let me give you a little taste of what's in store for you, specifically regarding your concern quoted above.
When I was dating Rebecca (my wife) and she was still going back to Pembroke for the summers, I was considering dying my hair bright blue again. I had it like that once just after high school and it was fun, so I figured it might be fun once more. She told me in no uncertain terms that I could go ahead, but if I did, I wouldn't be allowed to come visit her. More specifically, I could come visit her, but we wouldn't be able to go out anywhere in the actual city of Pembroke (she lived in the country about 20 minutes out of town) because my presence, even dressed fully normally except the blueness of my hair, would mean that there would be a 90% chance of a bar fight and I'd get shitkicked by rednecks.
Now, she may have been (read: probably was) overstating the case slightly, but even overstatements have grounding in reality, so that's that.
Now, Pembroke is a really nice little town, and it's beautifully situated. The country around it is gorgeous, and there are loads of places to go and explore - little country villages and such. Nice and quiet, if you like that sort of thing.
It's got a few main bars that I know of, G'Days and Shots being the most popular among young'ns, at least they were about two-three years ago. They're pretty nice places to go and grab a beer and some nachos or whatever, play pool/darts with friends and dance in a small club-ish atmosphere, respectively.
I heartily, truly and confidently doubt that you will find much if anything in the way of goth subculture 'round those parts. I'll ask Becca, so if she says otherwise, I'll let you know. The other possibility is that there is a significant goth culture there, but it's just so far underground that the locals don't even know about it, which is probably for the best, and exactly what was intended.
Fuck.
That's exactly what I was afraid you would say. I've been thinking about all this a lot and have come to the conclusion that I'll probably not have much in common with anyone due to my alternative preferences. I've literally started having dreams about walking into a bar wearing my big black boots and having the everyone stop and stare at me... you know, that movie-type scene where the music scratches off too and you can hear one lone cricket, chirping on a hilltop in the distance.
I have also thought that it's highly likely that many people my age who live there will either be married, might even have kids, and that's just another thing to set us apart.
I've come to the conclusion that I'll either end up hanging out with the seniors, playing cards and drinking whiskey at 10 in the morning, or staying home and pumping iron. I only HAVE to be there for 12 months, so my strategy is to ride it out and search for an internal posting so I can get the hell out of there as soon as possible.
:( Anyone wanna come visit me and scare the townsfolk?
Marg
It's funny you should mention the movie-type scene, cause that's almost exactly what happened to me one time in Tweed, ON. I was wearing a shirt that was known as the Vertigo Shirt in high school and a hat that I found at Woodstock, and was on the way to visit someone in the Ottawa Valley. I walked into a little diner to grab some lunch, and not only did everything stop and everyone start staring at me, but unlike the movies, it wasn't the kind of temporary thing where eventually people get bored of the funny looking outsider and go back to their drinks/lunches/lives, but the *ENTIRE* time I was eating my lunch, no-one else in the entire diner had a single conversation or even looked at the food that they were, for the most part, ignoring. It was, shall we say, rather awkward.
To put it into perspective, when you're in the Chalk/Deep River neck of the woods, Pembroke is "The City."
Pemroke has a population of 15,000.
