I know that Enigma is working on one for me, but he's having issues right now. So does anybody know of a proxy I can use to get into stephs chat (and use firefox) from work?

Firefox with chatzilla, or firefox + java applet?

Well firefox keeps asking me to provide a username and password to log onto the work proxy. mIRC just won't connect.

Actually I'm not working on it right now as I thought someone else had volunteered to let you use theirs. I can resume working on the matter if that's not the case. I did, however, notice that FDFnet (the irc network Steph is on) prohibits the use of proxies and I think does a proxy check when you connect. This may present some difficulties. Let me know if you need me to fiinsh setting one up.

I use a proxy all the time to connect to fdfnet - what fdfnet forbids is open proxies. A password-protected proxy should be fine.

The problem is that a proxy server isn't going to help you get into IRC unless you can find a non-java client - the Java client on Steph's page isn't going to connect through a proxy.

FA - If you read one of my previous posts...I have mIRC at work. Spaz said I could use his server at home as a temporary thing, but we haven't quite got that working yet, and apparently its pretty slow.

tor

Tor is a toolset for a wide range of organizations and people that want to improve their safety and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications that use the TCP protocol. Tor also provides a platform on which software developers can build new applications with built-in anonymity, safety, and privacy features.

Have you tried the devious tactic: offer the IT guy access to your naughty folders in exchange for releasing the locks on your net access?

:D

I don't think the IT guy works in this building. :D

Yeah, figured Tor would be blocked. What software do they use to block you? It should say on the block page. Websense? Surfcontrol?

So? That's what e-mail is for. :)

Send him an e-mail with a link to 1 picture and say "There's a whole directory full of these if you'll let me get use IRC to get to #stephthegeek."

Letting him know that you're going to a "geek" channel will get you bonus points, and when he looks up stephthegeek.com, he'll see that she's a hot-babe geek, and that'll give you even more bonus points.

:)

Checked FA, and tried. No such luck. I think I'm doomed.

I have however been offered an Exec Assitant job for 35K that I'm thinking about taking. I'm not sure how secure the position is though (startup company), but he said I can look at all the pr0n I want, and I'll be mostly working from home. :)

Do they need a system admin? Really.

If he said that in the interview, definitely take that job. Sounds like my kind of company! :D

Have you worked from home before? I fucking *HATED* it when I did it (FreeBSD admin + web programming job)...however I seem to be alone in that hatred.

You must be Erica because that's the first I've heard someone say that. I love working from home most days and just coming into the office periodically. It's a lot easier to do something other than work for a little while and then go into a work frenzy for a few hours and not have people looking at you with a strange expression.

If I don't leave the house for the office, everything sort of melds together...I wake up late, spend all day in my bathrobe, and there's never a clear divide between work and leisure. I get depressed.

Also you have a kid at home...if I had a kid I'd probably want to telecommute.

Yeah, the tendency to slack off would be too much for me if I worked from home.

I know he's looking for IT guys, but I'm not exactly sure what. I'll ask. Based in CHI though (though I'm not sure if you could be remote or not).

Which is one of the reasons I'm not jumping at it. However, its starting 35K...right now I'm barely breaking 20K. And its one of those kinds of jobs that normally I wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell getting without shitloads of experience.

Ah. Well in that case I would take it, at least for the time being. That way you will get the experience to obtain aforementioned jobs ;)

Yeah, she has a very good point. Even if (god forbid) the company goes straight into the ground like a fucking dart, you'll still have on your CV (resume? Whatever...) that you had this job at this pay scale and so on... That cant be bad. And working from home? Man, I LOVE home, thats where I keep all my stuff! So much better than an office (especially if they dont let you look at teh pr0n), with the added bonus of already having your desk decorated. I'd jump at it.

I like how my desk at work is decorated. And I don't have a desk at home yet. But I'm really thinking I might. The other thing is I think it looks REALLY bad on a resume to have any positions that you have only worked at a few months...but on the other hand, this new one will be a LOT of good experience, and I could probably go to college while I'm at it. I have to talk to him and ask if he'll do tuition reimbursment (which he probably will, even if its only me and out of his pocket). Anyway, I still have time to think about it, cause I told him I'd let him know my decision at about Thanksgiving, cause he wouldn't need me to start until Jan.
